Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Thursday addressed the Lok Sabha, urging lawmakers to pass the women’s reservation bill and describing it as a historic moment for India’s democracy. He emphasized that such defining moments are shaped by the mindset of society and leadership, noting that the bill—if implemented decades earlier—would have already transformed governance. Highlighting India’s identity as the “Mother of Democracy,” he called the legislation an opportunity to give a reformative push to the nation’s long-standing democratic traditions by ensuring greater participation of women in policy-making.
Stressing the importance of inclusive governance, PM Modi said that integrating 50 percent of the population into decision-making processes is not just desirable but necessary for achieving the vision of a developed India (Viksit Bharat). He pointed out that women’s growing political awareness, especially at the grassroots level through panchayats, has created a strong demand for representation in legislative bodies. According to him, millions of women leaders have evolved into influential voices, capable of shaping electoral outcomes and governance. He urged political parties to rise above partisan considerations and support the bill in the national interest.
The Prime Minister also addressed concerns about implementation, including delays due to census and delimitation, assuring that the process would remain fair and non-discriminatory. He argued that women’s reservation is not a political favor but a fundamental right that has been delayed for decades. Highlighting the success of women leaders in local governance, he said their inclusion in Parliament would significantly strengthen the country’s administrative capacity. Concluding his speech, PM Modi called on lawmakers to seize this crucial opportunity, warning that any delay could erode public trust and urging a unified effort to empower Nari Shakti and shape India’s future.
