Virtual hearing facility for journalists: SC

Media plays an important role in circulating information, Therefore, The Chief Justice of India NV Ramana,  launched a facility for virtual hearing for newshounds in the mobile app via links to attend the hearings, adding to this court will also introduce “Indicative notes” feature in their website that will summarize landmark judgment.

The Chief Justice Of India also stated that they are planning for live streaming proceedings for some court but only after the consent of all judges, and to assist this process they will also appoint a senior officer. He also directed to rationalize giving credentials to the media.

 The CJI proceed to remark that the requests had come from journalists to create infrastructure so that did they not need to come to Courts and could report from their homes accurately – “This will permit you to cover proceedings from mobile phones. Only, I must highlight that technology that is newly developed may be susceptible to issues that arise, and should not be unnecessarily magnified. Please be patient and give the system requisite time”. He further acknowledged the effort put in by the Committee to come up with the app within 7 days, despite being down with COVID – “their commitment to their duty deserves appreciation”.

Justice Gupta states that this initiative will increase transparency but the only concern is that the link which will be provided should not be shared. Justice Kanwilkar added that the institution should be paid for its service. CJI also remember those judicial officers and staff who lost their life in Covid, justice ended up his speech by appealing everyone to stay safe.
