Pawan Khera Moves Gauhati High Court for Anticipatory Bail in Assam Police Case

Congress leader Pawan Khera has approached the Gauhati High Court seeking anticipatory bail in connection with a case recently registered against him by the Crime Branch of Assam Police in Guwahati.

The plea was filed earlier today and has been registered by the High Court Registry for listing before an appropriate Bench.

The case against Khera includes allegations of defamation, forgery, and criminal conspiracy. It was initiated following his claims that Himanta Biswa Sarma’s wife, Riniki Bhuyan, possesses multiple foreign passports and undisclosed overseas assets.

On April 7, Assam Police visited Khera’s residence in Delhi, but he was not present at the time. Subsequently, he moved the Telangana High Court seeking transit anticipatory bail, which granted him one week’s relief on April 10 to approach courts in Assam.

However, on April 15, the Supreme Court of India stayed the Telangana High Court’s order following an appeal by the Assam government. Khera then challenged the ex-parte stay, but the apex court declined to vacate it and also refused to extend the transit bail period.

The Supreme Court directed Khera to seek relief from the Gauhati High Court.
