(2026), while striking down discriminatory limits on adoptive maternity leave, the Supreme Court underscored the absence of a statutory framework for paternity leave in India and urged the government to recognise it as a social security measure promoting gender equality and child welfare. - Bank Must Strictly Follow Customer Instructions; Liable for Deviation: In Canara Bank Overseas Branch v. Archean Industries Pvt. Ltd. & Anr. (2026), the Supreme Court held that a bank cannot act unilaterally contrary to a customer’s mandate, and any wrongful remittance in violation of clear instructions makes the bank liable for breach and negligence. - India Strengthens Immunisation Drive with New Vaccines: India’s Universal Immunisation Programme, one of the world’s largest, now provides free vaccination coverage to 2.9 crore pregnant women and 2.54 crore newborns annually, with full immunisation rising to 98.4% in January 2026. - State Liable for Accidents Involving Requisitioned Vehicles, Not Insurer: In District Magistrate & District Election Officer, Gwalior v. National Insurance Company Ltd. & Ors. (2026), the Supreme Court held that when a vehicle is requisitioned for public purposes, control shifts to the State, and therefore liability for accidents rests with the State authority, not the insurer. - Reserved Category Candidates Eligible for General Seats on Merit: In Chaya & Ors. v. State of Maharashtra & Anr. (2026), the Supreme Court held that candidates from reserved categories can be selected in the general category based on merit, even if they availed relaxation in qualifying exams, unless expressly barred by recruitment rules, reaffirming that merit governs open category selection. - India and EU Collaborate to Align Aviation Manufacturing Standards: India and the European Union have signed a working agreement between the Directorate General of Civil Aviation and the European Union Aviation Safety Agency to enhance cooperation in aviation manufacturing. - No Maintenance If Wife Lives Separately Without Just Cause: In Ratnaprabha Prakash Jawade v. Prakash Dhyanobaji Jawade (2026), the Bombay High Court held that a wife who chooses to live apart from her husband without sufficient or valid reason is not entitled to maintenance.
