The Ministry of Mines, Government of India, has invited applications for recruitment to the post of Junior Legal Assistant on a contractual basis. Candidates possessing the prescribed law qualification and experience may apply in the prescribed format on or before 25 September 2026.

Eligibility Criteria

  • The candidate should possess a Bachelor’s in Law from a recognized University and/or Institute in India duly recognized by the Bar Council of India.
  • The candidate should be qualified to be registered as an advocate in the Bar Council of India in terms of the Advocate’s Act, 1961.

Work Experience

  • The candidate should possess minimum post-qualification experience of 5–7 years having worked with Government Departments/PSUs and/or High Courts/Supreme Court of India.
  • The candidate must have experience in a Court of Law or be an expert in legal matters, with sufficient experience working in a Government Department having handled court matters.
  • Experience in dealing with matters related to Mining would be preferred.

Desired Skills

  • Excellent written and oral communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Knowledge of computer applications such as MS Word, MS Excel, PowerPoint, etc. is essential.

Age Limit

The candidate should be not more than 40 years as on the closing date of the Advertisement/Notice.

Selection Process

  • Applications will be shortlisted based on the prescribed qualifications and experience.
  • Selection will be made by the Competent Authority through an interview by a Selection Committee.
  • The decision of the Selection Committee shall be final and binding.
  • No TA/DA shall be admissible for attending the interview.

Nature of Work

The Junior Legal Assistant is expected to perform the following duties/functions:

  • Tender legal support on issues coming before the Ministry.
  • Prepare para-wise comments on all OAs, writ petitions, SLPs and PILs filed against the Ministry and forward them to the concerned Standing Counsel, after approval of the Competent Authority, for drafting the counter affidavit.
  • Scrutinise counter affidavits received from Counsel with reference to the para-wise comments.
  • Perform such other work of a legal nature as may be entrusted from time to time.
  • Maintain the list of pending court cases in the Ministry.
  • Monitor pending court cases.
  • Assist and be present in court at the time of hearing.
  • The candidate should be in sound health, both physically and mentally, and should be of impeccable integrity.
  • Assist the Ministry in any policy decision/matters as and when required by the Ministry.
  • Deal with court matters, including cases involving legal issues, for examination and recommendation of appropriate action to be taken by the Competent Authority.
  • Perform any other duty as may be assigned from time to time.

Salary

A monthly consolidated remuneration of ₹65,000 (fixed) will be paid.

In case of extension of tenure in the Ministry, the Junior Legal Assistant shall be eligible for an increment of 5% in remuneration, subject to certification and recommendation of the concerned Controlling Authority at the level of Joint Secretary.

Nature and Duration of Engagement

  • The engagement will be purely on a contractual basis and will not confer any right or claim for regularisation of appointment in the Ministry/Organisation.
  • The contract will initially be for a period of one year and may be extended on a year-to-year basis for a maximum tenure of 3 years, subject to appraisal of performance and need.
  • If a person leaves before completion of six months, he/she will not receive an experience certificate.
  • There shall be no change in the terms and conditions of the contract once finalised.

Leave

  • The Junior Legal Assistant shall be entitled to 8 days of leave in a calendar year.
  • No remuneration shall be drawn in case of absence beyond 8 days in a year.
  • Unavailed leave in a calendar year can neither be carried forward to the next calendar year nor be encashed.

Allowances and Other Conditions

  • The appointee shall not be entitled to allowances such as Dearness Allowance, Residential Telephone, Transport Facility, Residential Accommodation, Personal Staff, CGHS, Medical Reimbursement, Pension, gratuity, etc.
  • No separate monthly allowances, including Conveyance Allowance, House Rent Allowance or TA, will be payable.
  • Where travel outside Delhi (NCR) is required in connection with the work/assignment, the Ministry shall reimburse the actual cost of travel and Daily Allowance as per the rules/regulations of the Central Government applicable to Group B Non-Gazetted officers.
  • Income tax or any other tax liable to be deducted under prevailing rules will be deducted at source before payment, for which the Ministry of Mines will issue TDS Certificate(s).
