Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University Hosts Workshop on Mediation to Promote ADR Skills

Valedictory Session Graced by Esteemed Dignitaries

The valedictory session was graced by Justice Arun Kumar Singh Deshwal as the Chief Guest, along with Sanjay Kumar and Dr. Subroto Roy as Guests of Honour.

The session commenced with the ceremonial lighting of the lamp, followed by the felicitation of dignitaries by Dr. Usha Tandon, Senior Professor and Founding Vice-Chancellor of the University.

Mediation as a Necessity in Contemporary Justice System

Addressing the gathering, Justice Deshwal observed that mediation has long been an integral part of Indian society, particularly in rural communities where disputes are resolved amicably. He emphasised that in today’s context, marked by judicial delays and increasing pendency of cases, mediation has become not merely an option but a necessity.

While litigation remains crucial in serious matters, mediation serves as an effective mechanism within and beyond the courtroom, ensuring timely and mutually acceptable outcomes.

Institutional Vision and Academic Perspective

In her address, Dr. Usha Tandon highlighted the growing importance of mediation as an accessible and efficient mode of dispute resolution. She noted that mediation fosters dialogue, mutual understanding, and innovative solutions, thereby strengthening access to justice for society at large. She also acknowledged the contributions of Justice Deshwal towards the development and progress of the University.

Comprehensive Technical Sessions on Mediation

The workshop comprised four technical sessions, each designed to provide a holistic understanding of mediation.

The first session, conducted by Dr. Subroto Roy, focused on the fundamental principles of mediation and its role in preserving relationships while resolving disputes. The second session, delivered online by Smt. Chitra Ram Hankare, dealt with the legal framework governing mediation in India, including the functioning of Lok Adalats and mediation centres, and emphasised the relevance of institutional mediation.

The third session, led by Ms. Uma Ramanathan, highlighted the importance of communication skills, neutrality, and empathy, encouraging participants to understand the perspectives of disputing parties. The fourth and final session, conducted by Prof. Kiran Rai and Prof. Chirag Balyan, provided hands-on training through simulation exercises, enabling students to actively engage in mediation processes and develop negotiation strategies along with an understanding of ethical responsibilities.

Role of Legal Aid Society and Practical Learning

The dignitaries appreciated the initiative of the University’s Legal Aid Society in promoting practical legal education and spreading awareness about mediation among students. They emphasised that mediation plays a crucial role in reducing the burden on courts while simultaneously strengthening access to justice.

Through this workshop, Dr. Rajendra Prasad National Law University once again demonstrated its commitment to cutting-edge legal education by integrating theoretical knowledge with practical exposure. The initiative reflects the institution’s vision of preparing students to effectively respond to the evolving demands of the legal profession and contribute meaningfully to the justice delivery system.
