Ola Retrieves Top Spot In Electric Two-Wheeler Sales In April
The company has been under scrutiny from the Ministry of Heavy Industries over discrepancies in its February sales
Bengaluru-based Ola Electric has reclaimed the top spot in electric two-wheeler (E2W) sales in April. In March, it had slipped behind Bajaj Auto and TVS Motor.
The electric vehicles (EVs)-maker sold 11,330 units, accounting for 23 percent of the total two-wheelers sold in April.
However, its volumes are not comparable with other original equipment manufacturers (OEMs), as the registration numbers may include backlogs from February and March.
The company has been under scrutiny from the Ministry of Heavy Industries over discrepancies in its sales reported in February and the registrations recorded on the government’s Vahan Portal.
Though Ola claimed a sale of 25,000 units with a 28 percent market share in February, Vahan’s data showed only 8,653 registered units.
The gap was attributed by Ola to a disruption in vehicle registration process due to renegotiations with its former registration partners Rosmerta Digital Services and Shimnit India. It led to a backlog of over 16,000 vehicles, which the company hoped to clear by April.
Ola stated, “We have nearly cleared the February backlog and expect to complete the remaining February–March registrations in April 2025. To support this, we’re scaling our registration operations and actively coordinating with all external stakeholders.”
The company clarified that its February sales figures reflected genuine customer demand backed by financial commitment. It was not a ‘token-amount booking’.
It was said that Ola counted bookings for yet-to-be-launched models in its February sales figures, overstating its market share.
Meanwhile, Bajaj Auto, which topped the E2W sales chart in March, slipped to third place in April. The Pune-based firm sold 9,436 units, securing a 19 percent market share. This was a sharp decline from March, when it sold 35,130 units with a 27 percent share.
On the other hand, TVS Motor held the second spot, registering 10,335 units and capturing a 21 percent market share in April. In March, the company sold 30,614 units of its iQube electric scooter, with a 23 percent market share.
IPO-bound Ather Energy saw its market share rise to 16 percent in April, up from 12 percent in March. The company sold 7,765 units of its flagship Ather 450 and newly launched family scooter Rizta.
Hero MotoCorp, which sells the Vida range of electric scooters, retained its position as the fifth-largest E2W player. The company registered 2,865 units, claiming a 6 percent share in April.
