Eminent Jurist Fali S Nariman Passes Away

Renowned jurist and Senior Advocate Fali S Nariman has passed away at the age of 95.

He was widely recognized as a distinguished constitutional lawyer, having argued numerous landmark cases, including the notable NJAC verdict and the pivotal SC AoR Association case, which led to the establishment of the collegium system. In June 1975, he resigned from his position as the Additional Solicitor General of India in protest against the Indira Gandhi government’s declaration of emergency.

A staunch advocate for civil liberties and secularism, Nariman held significant influence as a public voice, with his critical opinions on judicial matters carrying considerable weight. He expressed criticism regarding the recent judgment in the Article 370 case. His son, Rohinton Nariman, served as a judge of the Supreme Court.

Nariman’s autobiography, “Before Memory Fades,” is widely revered, particularly among law students and young lawyers, serving as a source of inspiration for many. Additionally, his other works, such as “The State of the Nation” and “God Save the Hon’ble Supreme Court,” have garnered attention.

In his autobiography, Nariman wrote, “I have lived and flourished in a secular India. In the fullness of time if God wills, I would also like to die in a secular India.” His contributions were recognized by the Government of India, which awarded him the Padma Bhushan in 1991 and the Padma Vibhushan in 2007. He also served as a nominated member of the Rajya Sabha from 1999 to 2005.
