Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas advised Senior Advocate Mr. T.N. Subramanian in defamation suit before the Bombay High Court
The Leading Law firm, Cyril Amarchand Mangaldas (CAM) advised Mr. T.N. Subramanian, Senior Advocate (designated by the Hon’ble Bombay High Court in 2005) and a respected member of Rotary International (RI), in connection with a defamation suit filed before the Bombay High Court. Mr. Subramanian has held numerous leadership positions at RI, including serving as a Director on its Board.
Certain defamatory statements and allegations were made against Mr. Subramanian through a legal notice issued by Indian Literacy Mission via its advocate (“Defamatory Notice”). The notice was deliberately disseminated to at least 45 individuals, including officials, office-bearers, and executives of the Mission, and was further circulated by others through WhatsApp groups, including Rotarian groups, thereby gaining significant public traction.
Challenging the same, the CAM team, on behalf of the Client, filed a defamation suit before the Hon’ble Bombay High Court, along with an interim application for urgent ad-interim reliefs, inter alia, against John Doe defendants, given the widespread publication of the Defamatory Notice on social media. On August 7, 2025, the matter was heard at length by a bench comprising Hon’ble Justice R.I. Chagla. Senior Counsel Janak Dwarkadas, Darius Khambata, Sharan Jagtiani, and Counsel Rubin Vakil appeared for the Client and successfully made out a case for urgent ad-interim reliefs against those defendants (including John Doe) who failed to appear despite service of pleadings. Further, the appearing defendants, through their counsel, undertook not to publish or communicate defamatory allegations/statements of similar content as contained in the Defamatory Notice, which undertaking was accepted by the Court.
The matter was led by Aditya Mehta (Partner), with support from Shivani Garg (Principal Associate), Manan Shah (Senior Associate), Agneya Gopinath (Associate), Devanshu Anada (Associate), and Poornima Eapen (Associate).
