Credit Suisse Mumbai-based in-house counsel Swagata Bhattacharya has been appointed as the multinational bank’s new head of legal for India.
She takes over the role from Sapna Bhawnani, who has been acting as interim India legal head after she had been promoted as head of legal for South Asia at Credit Suisse around a year ago, after having planned a move to KKR.
Bhattacharya, a 2005 NUJS Kolkata graduate with an LLM from Singapore, had joined Credit Suisse from Deutsche Bank AG, and had previously also worked Shardul Amarchand Mangaldas in India and Allen & Overy Shook Lin & Bok in Singapore.
Bhawnani remains in her role with the Pune office of 9 lawyers reporting directly to her, with Bhattacharya and vice president legal Nupur Tainwala handling the India front-office operations.
