Ashok Lalwani Leaves Baker McKenzie to Join Greenberg Traurig

The leading global law firm Greenberg Traurig has appointed Ashok Lalwani, former Asia Pacific Head of International Capital Markets and Head of the India Practice at Baker McKenzie, as a Shareholder in its Singapore office.

Lalwani brings over 25 years of experience in international capital markets, cross-border mergers and acquisitions (M&A), and India-focused transactions. At Baker McKenzie, he played a key role in building one of the largest India practice groups among global law firms and led the firm’s India practice for 12 years before being succeeded by Mini vandePol in 2024.

In his new role at Greenberg Traurig, Lalwani will focus on public and private securities offerings, cross-border M&A, and India-related transactions, with a strong emphasis on U.S. federal securities laws.

His appointment forms part of Greenberg Traurig’s continued expansion in Singapore, where the firm launched its office just two years ago and has since recruited several senior lawyers from leading global firms, including Simmons & Simmons, White & Case, and Ashurst. Lalwani joins his former Baker McKenzie colleague Azlan Mohamed Noh, bringing the total number of shareholders in the Singapore office to 12.

During his tenure at Baker McKenzie, Lalwani advised on major transactions such as:

  • The first SPAC listing in Singapore (Vertex Technology Acquisition’s USD 148 million IPO, 2022).
  • The USD 343 million IPO of Mitra Keluarga Karyasehat.
  • EDP Renewables’ USD 695 million acquisition of a stake in Sunseap (2021).

Lalwani holds a Juris Doctor (cum laude) from the University of Notre Dame Law School, an MBA and Bachelor’s degree from Michigan State University, and is admitted to practice law in California.
