Alipak Banerjee Exits Nishith Desai Associates To Launch Independent Disputes Practice
After over a decade at Nishith Desai Associates (NDA), Alipak Banerjee, who led the firm’s international disputes practice in New Delhi, has launched his own independent outfit: Alipak Banerjee Law Chambers.
Banerjee previously led NDA’s Dispute Resolution practice in New Delhi, playing a pivotal role in shaping the firm’s litigation and arbitration portfolio. His newly launched chamber will focus on international arbitration, commercial and regulatory disputes, and white-collar crime litigation, with an emphasis on high-stakes, cross-border matters.
He noted that cross-border matters accounted for 85–90% of his practice, affording him the opportunity to collaborate with leading international law firms and multinational clients across jurisdictions.
During his time at NDA, Banerjee handled a wide array of matters including international commercial arbitration, investment treaty disputes, regulatory and commercial litigation, and more recently, white-collar crime cases.
Describing the decision to go independent as a “natural progression,” Banerjee stated in an interview:
“This move allows me to work more closely with friends, colleagues, and respected law firms — both domestic and international — bringing complementary strengths to complex mandates and delivering greater value to clients.”
Banerjee has received multiple recognitions, including being named a “Most Highly Regarded” Future Leader in Arbitration in Lexology Who’s Who Legal: Arbitration 2025. He is also ranked by Chambers and Partners Asia-Pacific 2025 for Dispute Resolution (New Delhi) and for White Collar Crime and Corporate Investigations in both the 2024 and 2025 editions.
Banerjee specialises in international commercial and investment treaty arbitration, cross-border litigation, and white-collar defence. He has represented clients in institutional and ad hoc arbitrations under the rules of SIAC, LCIA, and ICC, as well as before the Supreme Court of India and various high courts.
He is a member of the SIAC Reserve Panel of Arbitrators, the HKIAC List of Arbitrators, and serves on the HKIAC domain name dispute resolution panel. Banerjee also holds active roles within the International Bar Association (IBA) — including as Treasurer and Scholarship Officer of the Professional Ethics Committee, a member of the India National Committee of the International Centre for Dispute Resolution, and as part of the IBA Arbitration Committee’s Taskforce on Artificial Intelligence in Arbitration.
Recently, Vyapak Desai, also exited the firm, is set to leave the firm to establish his own independent law chambers. In his new role, he will focus on providing strategic legal advice and oral advocacy for complex cross-border litigations and arbitrations.
