We can reveal that NLU Delhi’s governing council (GC) has just confirmed the next VC with Prof Srikrishna Deva Rao, the current vice chancellor (VC) of NLU Cuttack in Odisha, according to two authoritative sources.
As we had reported yesterday, the final shortlist had been between Rao and RGNUL Patiala VC Prof Paramjit Jaswal and dean of USSLLS (GGSIPU) Prof Afzal Wani.
Update 18:13: We have reached out to Rao for comment. He said: “Naturally I’m happy because I’ve been with the National Law University Delhi in 2010-14, that was a critical time when professor Ghanshyam Singh, the first registrar, had passed away [while serving in the office of the registrar].”
Rao added that Singh was a great institution builder and he hoped to continue along this path.
Before joining NLU Cuttack as its VC in 2014, he had been at NLU Delhi for four years as a professor of law and, as he had explained above, also as registrar.
Before 2010, from 2004, he had been professor at Indira Gandhi National Open University in Delhi and GNLU Gandhinagar.
Additionally, between 1995 and 1997, he had been lecturer at Delhi University, followed by just over a year at NLSIU Bangalore as assistant professor and nearly six years, until 2004, at Nalsar Hyderabad as assistant and associate professor.
Rao holds an LLM from Kakatiya University, Warangal, a masters in philosophy and law from NLSIU Bangalore and a PhD from Delhi University.
NLU Delhi now finally has a confirmed new VC, after founding vice-chancellor (VC) Prof Ranbir Singh’s 12-year-tenure (and a search process that lasted nearly a year).
And while Prof Singh will remain at NLU Delhi as professor emeritus, the hunt for a successor at NLU Cuttack in Odisha will now have to start.
