The High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi is inviting applications for contractual engagement of Law Researchers/Research Associates to assist the Hon’ble Judges in the discharge of their judicial and administrative work.

Eligibility Criteria

  • Fresh Law Graduate/Post Graduate: A candidate must be a fresh Law Graduate/Post Graduate from a University/College recognised by the Bar Council of India.
  • Final-Year Law Students: Students studying in the 5th year of a 5-year Law course or the final year of a 3-year Law course are also eligible. Their final selection will be subject to passing the final-year LL.B. examination prior to engagement.
  • Computer Knowledge: Candidates having familiarity with computers will get preference in the matter of selection.
  • Recommendation: The candidature of a practising lawyer must be recommended by a designated Senior Advocate. In the case of an applicant other than a lawyer, the recommendation must be from the Head of the last Law School/College/University attended by him/her.
  • Candidates pursuing a Post Graduate degree in Law or any other degree or programme requiring compulsory attendance are not eligible to apply for the engagement.

Minimum Marks Required

A candidate must have passed all his/her examinations in the first attempt with at least 60% aggregate marks to be eligible to apply.

Age Limit

A candidate must be not less than 21 years and not more than 28 years of age as on the date of advertisement.

The selection will be made by Hon’ble the Chief Justice or the Committee appointed by Hon’ble the Chief Justice. The High Court will announce the names of shortlisted candidates, interview schedule and venue later on its official website.

Shortlisted candidates will also be called for interview individually through the email addresses provided by them.

Nature of Work

The Law Researcher/Research Associate will assist the Hon’ble Judge to whom he/she is assigned in judicial and administrative work. The functions include:

  • Carrying out research duties under the direct control of the Hon’ble Judge.
  • Reading case files and preparing case summaries, notes and chronological events, including legal questions involved and relevant latest case laws.
  • Searching case laws, articles, papers and other relevant materials required for judicial and administrative work.
  • Assisting in the preparation of judgments, corrections and proofreading.
  • Remaining present in Court during hearings and preparing notes of arguments along with research on citations.
  • Identifying facts, issues and questions arising during arguments or relevant for judgment.
  • Maintaining records of judgments passed by the Hon’ble Judge along with the points of law decided.
  • Performing work relating to procedural and substantive law as directed during the engagement.
  • Assisting the Hon’ble Judge in preparation of speeches/academic papers and providing assistance in important conferences.
  • Becoming acquainted with Court procedures, including filing of different categories of cases, provisions of law and movement of cases before and after filing.
  • Maintaining statistical reports, books, research papers and other materials.

Salary

Each Law Researcher/Research Associate will be paid a consolidated honorarium/stipend of ₹40,000 per month, or such higher amount as may be prescribed by the State Government from time to time.

The Law Researcher/Research Associate will not be entitled to any other allowance and/or remuneration and will not be treated as a permanent or otherwise employee of the High Court of Jharkhand, Ranchi or the State Government.

Period and Nature of Engagement

The engagement will be on a purely temporary and contractual basis for one year. It may be extended once for one year, and the maximum period of engagement will be two years, subject to the applicable conditions.

The post is a full-time engagement. The Law Researcher/Research Associate may also be required to attend the residential office of the concerned Hon’ble Judge in addition to normal duty during office hours and may be required to work on gazetted/local or weekly holidays.

Place of Posting

The headquarters of the Law Researcher/Research Associate will be the High Court of Jharkhand at Ranchi. The candidate may be required to work in the Court, at the residence of the assigned Hon’ble Judge or in the Court Library, as required.

Bar to Practice and Other Employment

  • A Law Researcher/Research Associate shall not be entitled to practise as a lawyer or take up any other employment or engagement, either on a full-time or part-time basis, during the term of engagement.
  • A Law Researcher/Research Associate attached to a particular Hon’ble Judge shall not be entitled to appear before that Hon’ble Judge for one year from the date of termination of engagement.
  • He/she shall not be entitled to appear in any case handled by the Hon’ble Judge to whom he/she was attached if he/she had worked on that case.

Documents to be Submitted

  • Matriculation Certificate as proof of date of birth.
  • Mark sheets of all semesters/years of Law Graduation and Post Graduation, if applicable.
  • Provisional/Original Degree Certificate of Law Graduation and Post Graduation, if applicable.
  • Recommendation from a designated Senior Advocate in the case of a practising lawyer, or from the Head of the last Law School/College/University attended in the case of an applicant other than a lawyer.
  • Computer certificate, if any.

Other Important Eligibility Conditions

  • Candidates should possess sound health and good moral character.
  • Candidates should not be involved in or related to any criminal case or any type of offence/act involving moral turpitude.
  • Original supporting documents will be required at the time of Document Verification/Interview.
  • Canvassing in any form will result in rejection of candidature.
