DSK Legal represented B62 Studios in Bombay High Court IP dispute concerning film Dhurandhar
The leading law firm in India, DSK Legal represented B62 Studios in proceedings before the Bombay High Court arising out of a commercial intellectual property suit filed by Reliance Industries Limited, through its media and entertainment division Jio Studios, seeking injunctive reliefs in relation to advertisements and behind-the-scenes clips featuring the character “Jameel Jamali” from the film Dhurandhar.
Case Background
The matter was heard on 4th May 2026 before Hon’ble Justice Sharmila U. Deshmukh. During the proceedings, the Court observed that continued dissemination of the impugned advertisements and clips would violate the producers’ copyright in the character from the film. The Court also noted that B62 Studios was a proforma party to the proceedings.
Settlement & Consent Terms
The Hon’ble Court further recorded that the disputes between the parties had been amicably resolved and consent terms had been executed. Under the consent terms, it was acknowledged that Reliance Industries Limited and B62 Studios are co-owners of the intellectual property rights in the film Dhurandhar, including the visual depiction of the character “Jameel Jamali”.
A limited license was also agreed to be granted for use of the character in the advertisements until 7th May 2026 upon payment of agreed consideration.
Court Directions
The Hon’ble Court additionally directed removal and disabling of access to the impugned advertisements and related links circulated through intermediaries and third-party platforms.
Accordingly, the Interim Application and the Suit were disposed of in terms of the consent terms and the reliefs granted by the Court.
Team
The DSK Legal team representing B62 Studios included Parag Khandhar (Partner), Chandrima Mitra (Partner), Diva Chanchani (Principal Associate), Anaheeta Verma (Senior Associate), and Pratyusha Dhodda (Associate).
Conclusion
