Amazon sued by InterDigital over video-compression patents
In the complaint, InterDigital said that it was suing Amazon after it was sued by the tech giant in the UK and Brazil amid negotiations over a potential licence to InterDigital’s technology.
InterDigital, research and development company, has sued Amazon in a Delaware federal court for allegedly violating its patent rights in digital video technology.

In a press release, InterDigital, which owns and licenses thousands of patents related to digital video, wireless communications and other technologies, said that it has also filed related lawsuits against Amazon on Brazil and Germany.
InterDigital chief legal officer reportedly stated: “Our preference is always to sign licenses through amicable negotiation, but Amazon’s decision to initiate litigation against InterDigital earlier this year shows that Amazon is more interested in litigating than negotiating.”
Whereas Amazon reportedly stated that it had sued earlier this year to “establish fair licensing rates for InterDigital’s video codec patents“.
Amazon’s Prime and Fire TV streaming services misuse InterDigital’s technology for enabling high dynamic-range video and improving streaming efficiency; the lawsuit states. Wilmington, Delaware-based InterDigital accused Amazon of infringing five of its U.S. patents.
An unspecified amount of monetary damages and a court order blocking Amazon from infringing its patents was requested by InterDigital.
