
The Supreme Court of India has taken a significant step to enhance security and discipline within its premises by issuing a circular on September 10, 2025, that strictly prohibits photography and videography in its High Security Zone. The directive, issued by Secretary General Shekhar C. Munghate, is aimed at tightening security and maintaining decorum inside the Court premises.

- Photography and videography are prohibited inside the High Security Zone, except for official use.
- Media personnel are permitted to conduct interviews and live broadcasts only from their designated area in the Low Security Zone.
- Use of mobile phones for photography and videography is banned in the High Security Zone lawns.
- Equipment such as cameras, tripods, and selfie sticks is restricted unless used for official purposes.
- Advocates, litigants, interns, or law clerks found violating the guidelines will face action from their respective Bar Association or State Bar Council.
- Media personnel violating the rules risk suspension of their High Security Zone access for one month.
- Registry staff violations will be dealt with strictly, and for other stakeholders, their respective heads of departments will be requested to take disciplinary measures.
- Security personnel have been empowered to disallow any individual from recording or photographing within the restricted zone.
Context
The move comes in response to growing concerns over unauthorised content creation within sensitive areas of the Supreme Court. By restricting such activities, the Court seeks to safeguard its functioning and ensure compliance with established protocols.
