Elon Musk’s xAI to sign European Union’s safety and security code of practice
The bloc’s chapters include transparency and copyright
Elon Musk’s company xAI is set to sign a chapter on safety and security from the European Union’s (EU’s) code of practice. It will help companies to comply with the landmark artificial intelligence (AI) rules.
Drawn up by 13 independent experts, signing the code is voluntary, and companies that decline will not benefit from the legal certainty provided to a signatory.
The EU’s code has three chapters: transparency, copyright and safety and security.
While the guidance on transparency and copyright will apply to general AI providers, safety and security will target providers of the most advanced models.
The company stated, “xAI supports AI safety and will be signing the EU AI Act’s Code of Practice Chapter on Safety and Security. While the AI Act and the Code have a portion that promotes AI safety, their other parts contain requirements that are profoundly detrimental to innovation and their copyright provisions are an over-reach.”
Earlier, Google agreed to sign the code of practice, while Microsoft’s President Brad Smith also said that the company was likely to sign it. Meanwhile, Facebook-owner Meta declined to sign the code. It showed reservation, stating that it introduced legal uncertainties for model developers and the measures were beyond the scope of the Artificial Intelligence Act.
