Texas Jury Says Verizon Owes $175 Million in Patent Infringement Case
A spokesperson for Verizon reportedly said that the verdict was ‘simply not supported by the facts’ and that the company would appeal.
Verizon Wireless must pay $175 million in damages for infringing an inventor’s patent rights related to wireless communications technology, a federal jury in Marshall, Texas, has ruled. The verdict in favor of Headwater Research comes just months after the company secured a $278 million win in a separate patent dispute against Samsung in the same federal court.
A Verizon spokesperson reportedly said that the verdict was “simply not supported by the facts” and confirmed that the company intends to appeal. Headwater’s attorneys did not immediately respond to requests for comment.
Scientist and inventor Gregory Raleigh, who founded Tyler, Texas-based Headwater, claimed in the 2023 complaint that its patented technology enables wireless devices to “reduce data usage and network congestion, extend battery life by decreasing power consumption, and keep users connected.”
