Trilegal Advised AvidSys Group On Franchise Acquisition In India’s First Rugby Premier League

Trilegal advised AvidSys Group on franchise acquisition in India’s first Rugby Premier League

Trilegal advised AvidSys Group on its successful acquisition of a franchise in the inaugural Rugby Premier League (RPL)—India’s first professional rugby league, organised by Rugby India in partnership with GMR Sports Venture Private Limited.

As part of this landmark sporting initiative, AvidSys Group will be promoting the ‘Chennai Bulls’, one of the six participating teams, featuring international players from leading Rugby 7s nations. Notably, Chennai Bulls is the only foreign-owned franchise in the RPL, reflecting significant international investment in Indian rugby.

The first season of the RPL—the world’s first franchise-based Rugby 7s format—is scheduled to take place in Mumbai from June 1 to 15, 2025.

Trilegal advised AvidSys Group in negotiating and finalising the franchise agreement, along with contracts for players, coaches, and other key personnel, demonstrating the firm’s capability in cross-border sports ventures and franchise-based league structures in emerging markets.

The Trilegal team was led by Ramakant Rai (Partner), with support from Shradha Sachdev (Counsel), Saptarshi Chatterjee (Senior Associate), and Drishti Kaushik and Tushar Krishna (Associates).
